Indian Supreme Court Expands Abortion Rights While America Goes Backwards

The Indian Supreme Court ruled today that abortion would be legal for all women up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, a change from the existing law that discriminated against single women by giving them only 20 weeks to make that decision. Imagine that! A country that is often chastised for its poor treatment of women, female foeticide, gender imbalance, and crimes against women nevertheless enshrines in its laws more freedoms than the supposedly most developed country in the world, the United States of America.

Here, the evangelical wing of the Republican Party completed its takeover of the Supreme Court with the appointment of Justice Barrett, and now the activist judiciary has dealt a crushing blow to the individual freedom of American women with the Dobbs decision that left reproductive freedom to be decided by the states. Predictably, state after republican state has been enacting draconian laws against abortion, to the point that even medically necessary procedures are being denied women till they are on the operating table, dying.

What has been sanctioned by the US Supreme Court by the repeal of Roe V. Wade is likely to become federal law if Republicans take back Congress. This is not hyperbole. This is the stated intent of several prominent Republican leaders. And it will happen, along with bans on contraception, gay marriage and other individual freedoms allegedly against Biblical teachings unless each one of us pledges to vote and get our friends and family to vote.

It's time for all of us to insist that our adopted country have at least the same rights as our home country, unless we want a worse future for ourselves, our daughters, and granddaughters.
